Welcome!

I am Mrs. Akins and I am so happy to be teaching 1st grade at Maxwell! This is my third year of teaching. I have previously taught 4th grade math and science in a long-term substitute position and completed my student teaching in first grade. I taught first grade at Maxwell for the past two years. I graduated from the University of Montevallo with my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I completed and passed edTPA and I am also math and science AMSTI trained. I am pursuing my Master of Education through the University of West Alabama online and will graduate in December of 2021.

I love teaching math and helping students make the discovery and engage in their learning.

I am passionate about creating a strong class community and encouraging students to work on a growth mindset instead of thinking they can't accomplish something.

I am originally from Leeds, AL. I love summer camp; I have spent five summers working all over the country! I love animals - especially moose and horses - even if my allergies don't love them! In college, I was involved in a sorority and Montevallo's unique homecoming tradition of College Night as part of the Gold Side Pit Chorus! I enjoy traveling and exploring new places and things.

I got married this summer to my husband, Philip, and we live in Tuscaloosa. We are enjoying spending time together and love to travel, especially to aquariums or the beach.
