Examples Of Appropriate Music Goals For Each Grade Level

Music Goals for Kindergarten:
- I can identify Quarter notes and Quarter note rests.
- I can recognize fast and slow music.
- I can identify high sounds and low sounds.
- I can sing in unison with my classmates.
- I can perform call and response.
- I can identify percussion instruments and describe how the sound is made.
- I can use classroom instruments to create a sound carpet.
- I can sing music loud and soft.
- I can sing sol-mi using curwen hand signals.
- I can move, clap, and find the beat.
- I can use good concert manners in assemblies.
Music Goals for 1st Grade:
- I can identify half notes and half rests.
- I can clap the steady beat of music.
- I can identify notes on a line or space.
- I can show the direction the notes go in a song. (High/low)
- I can sing music in a round.
- I can identify classroom instruments and use them with care.
- I can sing do, la, so and mi using curwen hand signs.
Music Goals for 2nd grade:
- I can identify whole notes and whole rests.
- I can identify a barline in music.
- I can sing music in allegro and adagio.
- I can name notes on the treble clef from middle C to G.
- I can recognize brass insturments and explain how the sound is made.
- I can identify music from a wide variety of cultures.
- I can sing and play simple rhythmic or tonal patterns by reading simple music notation
- I can sing with others a variety of genres of music.
Music Goals for 3rd Grade:
- I can recognize music in 4/4 time signature
- I can recognize 8th notes and 8th note rests
- I can demonstrate adagio and largo
- I can name the notes from middle c to A
- I can recognize music that is major and minor by listening.
- I can define ABA form, repeat signs, and recognize themes in music.
- I can sing and play alone simple rhythmic or tonal patterns by reading notation.
- I can sing alone and with others.
- I can describe similar and different characteristics of music genres.

- I can play 2-3 chords on the Ukulele.

Music Goals for 4th Grade:

- I can recognize 16th notes and 16th note rests.
- I can demonstrate a variety of tempos.
- I can name the notes from middle C to high C
- I can recognize major key, minor key, and dorian mode.
- I can define ABA form, Rondo Form, Repeat signs, D.C al capo.
- I can sight-read basic rhythms.
- I can sing unison, in a round, and I can begin to harmonize with a seperate part.
- I can do simple improvisation on a variety of classroom instruments.
- I can play 4-5 chords on ukulele.
- I can play the notes B,A,G,E,D,C, High C and High D on recorder.
Music Goals for 5th Grade:
- I can recognize music in 4/4, ¾, 6/8, and 2/4 time signatures.
- I can recognize complex rhythm patterns like triplets and dotted 16ths.
- I can demonstrate a variety of tempo ranges from Largo to Presto.
- I can name the notes from middle C to high C on Treble Clef.
- I can name the notes from A-G on the Bass Clef.
- I can recognize major, minor, and dorian mode.
