• Adv. World History 1500 to Present

    Course Description

This course will encompass a study of world history from 1500 to the present.  It will build on the knowledge and skills that students have acquired from their previous studies in history.  Students will study and analyze global issues and the impact they may have on society, politics, the economy, and the environment.  Emphasis will be placed on geographic impact, the development of civic knowledge/responsibilities, and emerging economic systems.  This course fulfills the graduation requirement for one credit of social studies for the regular diploma.  The Alabama Course of Study:  Social Studies, Bulletin 2004 lists the topics.  Preparation for the Alabama High School Graduation Examination (AHSGE) Social Studies is a component of this course.

    Textbooks and Materials

Individual schools will choose textbooks in accordance with the state-approved textbook list.  Our text will be World History Modern Times by Glencoe.  I will supplement the text with extra readings from primary source documents and other resources appropriate for this course.

    Attendance and Conduct

All Tuscaloosa County Board policies, individual school policies, and classroom rules will be followed.  Students must present an excuse within two days of their absence to be excused** This does not mean students have two days to do all makeup work! **Makeup work is done only for excused absences.  I give as many days to makeup work as you were absent.  If you are only absent for one class, I expect you to hand in all work or take makeup tests the next day, so come prepared!!  If you are out 3 days, then your first day back I will tell you everything you missed and when it is due.

*Do not bring food or gum in my room.  The only drink acceptable is water in a closable container.   I want to keep this new school clean and pretty as long as possible. *Please do not write or carve on the furniture or walls.   I hate graffiti.  Sleeping in class is insulting to the teacher and the rest of the class.  I will contact your parents.  After that if it continues to be a problem, I will write you up.

    Grading Policy

The final grade for each nine-week grading period will be based on various methods of assessment.  These methods may include, but are not limited to, tests, homework assignments, poster projects, essays, or quizzes. Non-academic participation will not be graded. The following is a guide to my grading scale:

    1. Always have your materials in class.  This includes your textbook, notebook, paper and writing utensils (but not red, orange, or other fluorescent colors).  Five points will be deducted from worksheets and tests if you do not have the required materials or put your name on them.

    2.  Each nine weeks you will have between 6 to 9 tests.  Each test will be 100 points.  Collectively, the tests will compose 50% of your grade.  You will need a pencil every test day for the scantron parts and paper too for the fill in the blank, short answer, and essay sections.  Always bring your materials on test days because we will always be starting new chapters after every test with such long periods.

    3. Work done in class and for homework will all be graded out of 100 points. Collectively these will count 30% of your grade.

    4. Comprehensive nine week exams are required.  The exam will be worth 20% of your grade.

I do not do extra credit because I do not have time to make out or grade extra assignments. There will be times when I offer movies or TV programs for an optional credit, but these will be posted or announced in class for several days before the event.

Parents: As you may know, teachers were not given any money to buy supplies or materials for their classrooms. Any donations or supplies that you could have your children bring in would be greatly appreciated. Materials needed are copy paper, paper towels, hand sanitizer, tissues, or any cash donations will be spent on materials for your child’s classroom. Thank you.
