•      My name is Mrs. Elise Hinton and I extend to you and your child my warmest welcome into my class. More importantly, I am THRILLED to be your child’s Special Education Teacher this year! This will be my first year working at Englewood Elementary; however, I have thirteen years of experience as a Special Educator and have worked the past seven years at Brookwood Elementary which is in the Tuscaloosa County School System.

I was born and raised in Excel, Alabama (Monroe County) and am the oldest of two! I have a younger brother who is also married and is expecting a baby girl at the end of August. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in K-12 Special Education from Auburn University in 2008 (WAR EAGLE!). While at Auburn, I was a member of the Auburn University Marching Band where I played the trumpet. I’m highly qualified in the state of Alabama in the area of Elementary Special Education. Further, I graduated in 2014 with a master's degree in the area of K-6 Special Education from the University of West Alabama. I have experience working with students and adults who have disabilities in the following areas: Learning Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Intellectual Disabilities, Vision Impairments, Hearing Impairments, Emotional Behavior Disorders, Orthopedic Impairments and Other Health Impairments.

My husband, Brian, and I recently celebrated our seventh wedding anniversary. He is a native of Tuscaloosa and works at Shelton State Community College. He is a grounds keeper for the college and works extremely hard! We have a daughter named Mazie who is 18 months old. We are members of First United Methodist of Tuscaloosa and enjoying worshiping there on Sundays.

Third grade is an incredible time to watch your child’s skills grow and develop. It’s a fundamental year, in which your child will become a more mature and independent student. Third graders become more advanced readers, writers, mathematicians, and thinkers by digging deeper into topics and beginning to analyze what they read and learn. I believe third grade is probably the most pivotal period in your child’s education were the focus shifts from learning to read to reading to learn. I hope to make your child’s learning experience a fun and exciting one, and I hope to instill a love of learning.

My philosophy for learning is that each child is unique, and each child learns in a different way. This year will be a challenging one for your child as compared to last year. However, I will try to make the lessons more interesting as well as breaking down the topic and building up to the task, so that each child understands as well as enjoys them. I believe in hands-on experiences, learning creatively, and learning through play.

If you would like to meet me to discuss your child’s performance or any other problems that he/she is facing in class, you can feel free to meet me after school hours Wednesday and Thursday, between 3pm and 4 pm. It will be appreciated if you tell me a day before to schedule the meeting. Apart from this, you can also e-mail me at ehinton@tcss.net to discuss any concerns, you have about your child.
