    The Children's Center
    School problems have continued to be an escalating issue for parents, educators, social workers, and community leaders. To list all the problems that students are now faced with can be quite extensive, however some of the most prevalent are: *Bullying and threat/intimidation behaviors As society continues to be faced with more violence, children have became more exposed to aggressive behaviors and prone to anger that may be transferred in their social relationships with other students. We have all seen in the past few years students who have taken on violence as a way of getting their point across, and seeking attention. Bullying is no longer one kid threatening to meet you after class. It can now involve severe threats and dangerous thought out plans. Bullying also may encourage others to form a group that can intimidate the entire school.

    Teaching Tolerance - A Project of the Southern Poverty Law Center
    It seems like only yesterday you were arranging play dates for your little one. Now, school project due dates, game schedules and other extracurricular activities are tracked on your refrigerator. Along with your child's growing list of activities comes a growing list of friends. He seeks a sense of belonging and acceptance from peers, and these friendships are a vital part of his development. They are friendships that will be important later in life, too, as they provide the roadmap for future relationships, teaching him to resolve conflict and get along with others across group lines. Now that your child has moved beyond simply noticing the similarities and differences he shares with others, he is learning how such characteristics - and people's attitudes about them - have the power to make him and others feel included or excluded. While parental influence plays a critical role in how children view and respond to difference, the elementary and preteen years mark a period when various outside sources also are competing for influence. This is the time when the values you emphasized early on - and the behaviors you modeled all along - are put into action.

    As a culture, we are focusing new attention on childhood bullying and harassment. As we watch children being crushed by bullying, we often feel powerless. No more! There are ways to stop bullying, based on decades of research. There is little need to describe why people want to stop childhood bullying. Childhood bullies are more likely to become young adult criminals than are non-bullies. Bullied children may grow up with diminished self-confidence. We sometimes see bullying as an inevitable part of childhood. Yet, according to world-wide research, 50% reductions in rates of bullying are possible. The Stop Bullying Now intervention is based on The work of many researchers in bullying prevention including England's Smith and Sharp, The USA's Dorothea Ross and Dorothy Espelage, Canada's Wendy Craig and Debra Pepler, Australia's Ken Rigby, Norway's Dan Olweus, and on social worker Stan Davis's thirty-five years of experience with children, families, and schools.

    AAA Math
    AAA Math features a comprehensive set of interactive arithmetic lessons. Unlimited practice is available on each topic which allows thorough mastery of the concepts. A wide range of lessons (Kindergarten through Eighth grade level) enables learning or review to occur at each individual's current level. Immediate feedback prevents practicing and learning incorrect methods, which is a common result of traditional homework and worksheets. Practice can continue as long as desired in a non-threatening format which helps build self-esteem and confidence. The lessons from the website as well as additional lessons are on the CD which is available in English or Spanish language versions. The CD runs on Windows and Macintosh computers. You do not need to be connected to the internet to use it which is desired by many parents of young students. There are no advertisements on the CD.
